Event Overview

National Institute of Science Education and Research, HBNI

In an attempt to create more interest among students in the field of dark matter, NISER is organizing its 2nd dark matter day event on 31st October, 2019. The event comprises of an introductory dark matter video, followed by talks by an invited expert speaker from IIT Guwahati and an in-house speaker to discuss the prospects of doing dark matter research at NISER. We will have some demonstration experiments that explain various dark matter concepts in an interactive way. The program would be attended by about 180-200 college students(10+2 and first year undergrads) from in and around Bhubaneshwar and Jatni, which is where NISER is located. The schedule is as follows (all timings in Indian Standard Time):

10:00 AM to 10:15 AM : Welcome the audience
10:15 AM to 10:45 AM : An introductory video on the dark matter problem
10:45 AM to 11:30 AM : Talk by an expert (Dr. Subhaditya Bhattacharya, IIT Guwahati, India)
11:30 AM to 12:00 PM : Talk on NISER’s involvement in dark matter research (Vijay Iyer, NISER, India)
12:00 PM to 12:30 PM : Ask a scientist (Interactive session with the audience)
12:30 PM to 12:40 PM : Conclusion and vote of thanks

LUNCH

Demonstration experiments to explain various aspects of dark matter search will start along with lunch and expected to go on till 5 PM.

About National Institute of Science Education and Research, HBNI

National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) is an autonomous institute operating under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), India. NISER has a strong group in HEP (ALICE, CMS, STAR), Condensed matter and optics. NISER is also part of Super Cryogenic Dark Matter search (SuperCDMS) which is among the most sensitive dark matter search experiments in the world in the low mass WIMP region. NISER is also part of Dark Matter at India Based Neutrino Observatory (DINO) experiment which will commence soon. Along with dark mater NISER is also part of NoVA and MINER experiments that understand neutrino properties. Being the only Asian collaborator in SuperCDMS, and with the growing interest in dark matter search, NISER would like to make its share of efforts in popularizing this field of research, as well as pioneer dark matter search efforts within India.
