Art Meets Science: Dark Matter

Art Meets Science: Dark Matter
2017 Event | 2017 | DESY | Notkestraße 85, Hamburg, Germany |

Event Overview

When artists and scientists meet, what’s the one of the most likely topics of discussion? Dark matter of course. The fact that it remains a mystery but that it constitutes a whopping 25% of the Universe has everybody in its grip. That’s also what happened when 14 artists from all across Germany got together with dark-matter-hunting scientists from Germany’s research center DESY. Their works – ranging from artistic gravitational lenses, sound and 3D installations and paintings to a real collision – are shown from 13 October to 9 November at DESY. On Dark Matter Day artists and scientists meet again on stage to compare methods (which are not too different), we will show the short film series “Dark Matters” and there will of course be tours to the artworks on campus.

This is the first time that science meets art at DESY.

About DESY

DESY is one of the world’s leading accelerator centres. Researchers use the large-scale facilities at DESY to explore the microcosm in all its variety – from the interactions of tiny elementary particles and the behaviour of new types of nanomaterials to biomolecular processes that are essential to life. The accelerators and detectors that DESY develops and builds are unique research tools. The facilities generate the world’s most intense X-ray light, accelerate particles to record energies and open completely new windows onto the universe.
That makes DESY not only a magnet for more than 3000 guest researchers from over 40 countries every year, but also a coveted partner for national and international cooperations.
