Event Overview

National Institute of Science Education and Research

In an attempt to create more interest among students in the field of dark matter, NISER is organizing a dark matter day event on 31st October, 2017. The event comprises of an introductory dark matter video, followed by talks by some invited speakers and finally concludes with a tour around some demonstration experiments that explain various dark matter concept in an interactive and fun way. The program would be attended by about 150 school and college kids from in and around Bhubaneshwar and Jatni, which is where NISER is located. The schedule is as follows (all timings in Indian Standard Time):

10:15 AM to 10:45 AM : A planetarium show titled “Phantom of the Universe”

10:45 AM to 11:15 AM : Skype talk by SuperCDMS scientist (Dr. Joel Sander, University of South Dakota, USA)

11:15 AM to 11:45 AM : Talk by DINO scientist (Dr. Debasish Majumdar, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, India)

11:45 AM to 12:05 PM : Talk on NISER’s involvement and goals in Dark Matter Research (Vijay Iyer, NISER, India)

12:05 PM to 12:30 PM : Dark Matter Pop Quiz

12:30 PM to 1:00 PM : Webinar by LIGO India scientist (Dr. Sukanta Bose, Inter University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune, India)

1:00 PM to 1:10 PM : Conclusion and vote of Thanks

Lunch would be provided to invited audience. During and after lunch, guests are encouraged to check out the various demonstration experiments setup by students to explain various aspects of dark matter in the library quadrangle area.

The events would be live streamed on Facebook through the NISER Science Activity Club page: https://www.facebook.com/sacNISER/

Local media would be covering this outreach program

Anyone who finds dark matter and its mysteries fascinating are welcome to this event.

About National Institute of Science Education and Research

National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) is an autonomous institute operating under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), India. NISER has a strong group in HEP (ALICE, CMS, STAR), Condensed matter and optics. NISER is also part of Super Cryogenic Dark Matter search (SuperCDMS) which is among the most sensitive dark matter search experiments in the world in the low mass WIMP region. NISER is also part of Dark Matter at India Based Neutrino Observatory (DINO) experiment which will commence soon. Along with dark mater NISER is also part of NoVA and MINER experiments that understand neutrino properties. Being the only Asian collaborator in SuperCDMS, and with the growing interest in dark matter search, NISER would like to make its share of efforts in popularizing this field of research, as well as pioneer dark matter search efforts within India.
